Austin Spine

With over 28 years of professional experience, Dr. Kurt W. Von Rueden spent the first nine years of his practice in Denver, Colorado. He was mentored there by Dr. Tom Lowe, a highly respected spinal deformity surgeon who was elected president of the Scoliosis Research Society. In the early 1990’s, they created a post residency Spine fellowship in collaboration with the University of Colorado, to provide additional training in all aspects of spine and complex spinal deformity surgery to young surgeons after they had completed a traditional 5 year residency program. Over his career he has mentored several spinal surgeons, passing on his extensive experience.

In 1994 , Dr Von Rueden was awarded the North American Spine Society traveling fellowship. He then travelled to several spine centers throughout the United States and Switzerland to study with some of the worlds leading spinal surgeons.

In 1996, he relocated to Austin, Texas after being recruited by Dr. Tim Lowry, MD and Dr. Laura Flawn, MD. He founded Texas Scoliosis and Spine Austin in 2001, and in 2004, the practice merged and began incorporating surgery, non-operative treatment, and physical therapy, forming the Spine Center care model in Austin.

Dr. Von Rueden has been a fellow in the Scoliosis Research Society since 1992. He also is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society. He routinely visits other experts in the field to expand his knowledge and experience. Dr Von Rueden regularly attends multiple spine society meetings. He was one of the original members of an international group of physicians called the Spine Trauma Study Group, who are dedicated to the treatment and research of spinal trauma.

Dr Von Rueden was the Director of Spinal Trauma at Brackenridge Hospital for many years and was trained and mentored by several giants in the field, including several past presidents of the Scoliosis Research Society. His experience and training has uniquely prepared him to provide the highest caliber of care to his patients at Austin Spine.

Dr. Von Rueden currently serves as Spinal Consultant to the University of Texas and routinely manages the care of student athletes. For the past 20 years, Dr. Von Rueden has served on the editorial staff for the highly acclaimed Spine Journal.
