Foraminal Stenosis

Foraminal Stenosis is the narrowing of the cervical disc space caused by enlargement of a joint (the uncinate process) in the spinal canal. The majority of symptoms with this type of cervical spinal stenosis are usually caused by one nerve root on one side.

Typically, the condition is characterized by non-continuous pain developing slowly over many years and is related to an activity (such as bicycle riding) or position (such as holding the neck in an extended position). Although more common in the neck, it can also occur in the lumbar spine.

Symptoms

  • Burning pain in the neck, shoulders, arms, and/or hands.
  • Tingling in the neck, shoulders, arms, and/or hands.
  • Numbness in the neck, shoulders, arms, and/or hands.

Our Approach

The diagnosis of foraminal stenosis begins with a complete medical history and physical examination. Your doctor will determine what symptoms are present, what makes them better or worse, and how long they have been present for. MR scanning or CT scanning can visualize the canal where the nerves live and quantify the degree of narrowing as well as rule out other causes. Treatments can vary depending on the severity of your symptoms and how much they limit your everyday activities. In severe or chronic cases surgery will be recommended. We prefer to use the latest minimally invasive techniques.
